The Cycleway Portrait
An ecosystem is a community of plants and animals living together within a habitat. The living organisms influence each other and their surroundings, and the habitat in turn has an effect on them. These interactions are vital to maintain the stability of an ecosystem. If the habitat changes, or a member of the community disappears, the whole system will be affected.
Ask each child to focus on a feature of the Cycleway which interests them- a flower, insect or a particular beautiful stone.
Make sketches of the object,
Note: How their chosen object is affected by other things in the hedge or the grass?
If it is a plant, is it in the shade of other plants or does it make shade?
Is it visited by an insect or other animal etc. ?
If it is an insect does it sit on or eat the plants etc. ?
Does it interact with other insects etc. ?
One of each child’s sketches could be chosen to be linked together to show the interactions between the different plants, animals and objects. Or the sketches could be used to make a painting,
If it’s a day activity why not paint it on site?
Looking at shapes and colours
Use this sheet to help you start sorting some of the flowers from this area. To begin with, do not worry about naming the plants. When you can easily recognise them you can begin learning their names.
How many different colours?

Do any of the flowers smell?
Which flowers grow singly?
Which grow in a patch?
