Explore Braunton is a community project, established by North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership, which aims to bring to life the wealth of resources for local residents, visiting public and school children in a way that has never been seen before.
It is an innovative project, which has received funding of £99,000 from various sources, most notably the Heritage Lottery Fund, but also Devon Renaissance, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Sustainable Development Fund and Devon County Council.
One of the conditions of funding is that the project must be innovative in its approach and to this end exciting new technology has been developed in the form of handheld multimedia devices. These devices are triggered by global positioning satellites to deliver engaging content at key locations.
This technology has never been used in North Devon and indeed, it is only in use in a very limited number of places nationally, so it’s a ground-breaking move in interpretation and a great asset to North Devon.
In addition to the Braunton Explorers, guided walks leaflets have been produced, walk leaders have been trained, schools have been engaged with and local businesses supported.
The project has funded a new information board in the centre of the village, IT equipment / internet access for Braunton Museum and Braunton Countryside Centre and also an online information archive resource – which is what you are reading now.
Project Officer Katie James was employed for twelve months to see the project through.
Katie says “Braunton has a rich and colourful history, and today it is home to an active community that is full of knowledgeable, skilled people. We want to reflect this fact, and ensure that the Explore Braunton project is engaging and accessible for all, from local residents, teachers and school children to visitors to the area.
I’d like to thank all the people who have contributed so generously to the project so far and encourage people to continue sending me their information, memories and pictures – all of which is very gratefully received.”
